Storyboard Text

  • Step aside, Atticus.
  • Hey Atticus!
  • What are the children doing here? I have to send them away before anything happens.
  • ...
  • No! I am staying right here.
  • Jem, take the other children and go home!
  • Angry men from Maycomb and out of town approach Atticus, who is standing outside the jailhouse containing Tom Robinson. They demand that he move aside, for they intend on lynching the innocent man.
  • I go to school with your son, Walter!

  • Scout, Jem, and Dill suddenly find their way through the crowd and face Atticus. Scout and Dill are mostly excited to see Atticus, unaware of the situation. But, Jem is somewhat confused, sensing the tension.

  • Atticus attempts to convince Jem to take Dill and Scout home. However, Jem refuses to leave. Atticus and Jem stand off, and Atticus eventually decided to let the children stay.
  • Get to sleep, Tom. You're safe.
  • Scout begins to converse with the only familiar face in the crowd of men, Mr. Cunningham. She begins to speak about entailments and his son. As she continues, the men get increasingly uncomfortable.
  • Entailments are bad, Mr. Cunningham!
  • Scout sparks up conversation with him, the whole group seems to gain humility.
  • The men eventually leave. With the innocent and naive children around, they decided against lynching Tom Robinson. As they depart, the kids become increasingly curious about the events that just took place.
  • Once the men finally leave the jailhouse, Atticus meets up with Tom Robinson. Mr. Underwood also appears with a double-barrel shotgun, ready to protect Atticus. Atticus assures Tom that he is safe and he can finally get a good nights rest.
