  • MINARET REPAIRS
  • Taliyah is a construction worker contracted to move one of the minarets on the Hagia Sophia onto a ship so it may be repaired. Before this, she needs to find the height of the minaret so she can choose which crane she will use to relocate it. Taliyah is standing 45 meters away from the minaret and looking up to the top of it at a 53o angle. She uses the tangent ratio to find the minaret's height by tan(53) · (45)=60. Therefore, the minaret is 60 meters tall.

  • Now that Taliyah knows the height of the minaret, she can decide how tall the crane she is going to use must be. She decides upon a 65 meter tall crane to lift them up. Despite knowing these two measurements, she still requires the angle at which the top of her crane will meet up with the minaret. To find this, she does sin(60/65) to find the ratio, and then undoes it with sin-1 (60/65)=67, meaning that the angle she must use is 67o.

  • Taliyah has removed the minaret from the building and has packed it away in a crate. It is now ready to be placed on the ship for transport.
  • Finally, Taliyah must load the minaret onto the ship. Before she puts the minaret on, she needs to find the length of the platform she is placing it on. Using a flagpole as a reference for height, she looks to the top of it and measures her angle of inclination to be 74o. Knowing that the distance from the close edge of the platform to the top of the pole is 11 meters, she can use this information to find the length of the platform. Using cos74o(11), she is able to find the length of the platform to be around 3 meters and place the minaret on it.
