  •  Puritan/Colonialism 1630-1750  People were migrating from Europe to North America.  There was a great awakening happening.  Creation of Dominion of New England.  Puritan writing was influenced by religion.  The Puritans felt their job was to glorify God. They valued God. The genre was mainly religious.  The type of writing was mainly sermons and letters.  Some authors were: William Bradford died May 9th 1657 born March 19th 1590, Anne Bradstreet died Sep. 16th 1672 born March 20th 1612, John Smith died June 21st 1631 born January 1580 , Mary Rowlandson died January 5th 1711 born 1637, John Winthrop died March 26th 1649 born January 12th 1587  Some of the popular works are: Plymouth Plantation, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung up in America, The General History of Virginia, The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, Bay Paslam Book.
  • Revolutionary Period 1750-1800 The age of Reason/Enlightenment. The Revolutionary Era was about gathering support for the Revolutionary war by instilling pride and patriotism in American citizens. Americans did not like the taxes on Britain so they revolted. The Boston Massacre happened.  The Boston Tea Party.  The Revolution begins with fighting.  The printing press. The medium the writers used was mainly political pamphlets  and travel writings.  It was persuasive and elaborate.  Some authors were: Benjamin Franklin died April 17th 1790 born January 17th 1706, Thomas Paine died June 8th 1809 born February 9th 1737, Thomas Jefferson died July 4th 1826 born April 13th 1743, David Hawke cannot find death or birth, John Newbery died December 22nd 1767 born July 9th 1713. Some of the works of this time were: Common sense, The colonial experience,  The way to wealth, The Federalist, Experiments and Observations on Electicity.
  • Romanticism 1800-1860 The focus on narrators or writers emotion and inner world.  Celebration of nature, beauty, and imagination.  Rejection of industrialization.  Idealization of women, children, and rural life.  Rationalism and Social convention.  Inclusion of supernatural elements.  War of 1812 began.  Star Spangled banner written. Monroe doctrine is issued. Nat turners rebellion. Gold discovered in California.  Some of the works: Wuthering heights, Lyrical ballads, Songs of innocence and of experience, Pride and prejudice, The complete poems.  Some authors: William Wordsworth died 1850 born 1770, Lord Byron died 1824 born 1788, John Keats died 1821 born 1795, Mary Shelley died 1851 born 1797, Percy Bysghe died 1822 born 1792.
