El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in South America. In 1821 it declared its independence from Spain. Indigenous Indian populations had always owned land communally, but in 1881 this right to share land was banned.
This meant that a few powerful land owners were able to monopolise the land and the coffee plantations. Coffee was the biggest export and therefore the biggest source of income
Poorer farmer were forced off their land resulting with them going through extreme poverty. They had to work unreasonable hours for little pay
In 1929 there was a severe slump in the price of coffee so they owners did not harvest the crops, causing the poorer farmers having no work and they starved. This selfish decision sparked major ruthless protests
The government created a range of military regimes, which lasted up to 50 years, to oppress the protesters. They beat harrashed totured abducted executed and raped many innocent people.
Only a few of rich and powerful families lived, this was because anyone who threatened the positions of them the military would deal with the offender. The military was offend bribed.
