“If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
From the Red Sea Moses led the people of Israel to the Desert of Shur. For 3 days they travelled in the desert without finding water. Even when they came to Marah they could not drink its water because it was bitter. So the people whined.
Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.
“Give us water to drink. Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
“Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”
The Israelite community set out from Elim and arrived in the Desert of Sin, it had been on the 15th day of the second month after they had left Egypt. Everyone complained again against Moses and Aaron.
“What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
Moses went to God and asked him what he should do. The Lord then provided the people with a pleantaful amount of food like bread.
The Israelite community left the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they argued with Moses.
Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel and he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites complained and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
“Go take some of the elders of Israel with you and your staff. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Hit the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.”
