Doris Key Relationship To Other Major Characters: - Doris is Jazz and Ali's mother. -Doris is John's Ex. Traits: -Compassionate "My mother figured that she might know something that could help him. She brought him something even more crazy-a ball of yarn and some knitting needles" (Reynolds 19-20). -Protector "Some were even laughing under their breath, and this time Noodles wasn't around to shut it down. My mother was pissed. (...) She ran toward the crowd like she was getting ready to start swinging on folks, and people started walking away pretty quickly" (Reynolds 19). -Hard-Working "She's a social worker, and all that really means is that she takes care of mentally sick people" (Reynolds 3). Doris works 2 jobs (one of which is being a social worker) in order to provide for her family.
Ali Key Relationship To Other Major Characters: Ali is Doris' son Ali is Jazz's big brother. Traits: -Honorable "Then I took five bucks out my pocket, laid it on the counter, and walked out" (Reynolds 39). Ali decided that he would pay for the yarn that Noodles stole. This makes him honorable it was the right thing to do. -Protector & Compassionate "I felt so damned guilty. I was so ashamed. I felt like I had let my own brother down. I should've stayed close. I should've protected him" (Reynolds 147). "It's okay, man. Just rest."(Reynolds 147). Ali is always there to protect the people that he loves so he was upset when he wasn't there for Needles. Ali ended being the one who cared for Needles.
Jazz Key Relationship To Other Major Characters: -Jazz is Ali's little sister -Jazz is Doris' daughter. Traits: -Caring "Then the old soul in her kicked in. "You want me to fix a plate up for Needles?" (Reynolds 115). Jazz figured that because she made Noodles a plate and Noodles was extremely hungry, Needles would be as hungry. It made her upset when Noodles refused to take Needles a plate because he thought that Needles wasn't hungry and Needles was just fine. -Honest "She said Needles looked scared, and that his lips were poking out and puckered so tight that it looked like he was slurping spaghetti" (Reynolds 13). Jazz was being very honest about how she thought it looked when Noodles was kissing that girl.
