  • The Ural Mountains were beneficial to the Russians due to the protection they give and the minerals they contain. The land of Russia consists of a densely forested, swampy, and flat north and a hilly grasslands in the south. The 3 major rivers are The Dnieper, Don, and Volga. These rivers allow travel and many resources.
  • During the early ages of the Byzantine Empire, many of the forests were inhabited by tribes of Slavis traders and farmers.
  • Within the 800's, small bands of adventurers known as Rus, however most likely Vikings, built forts along rivers and settles among Slavs.
  • Russia est. 800
  • Legend has it that the Slavs invited Viking chief Rurik to be their king.
  • Novgorod est. 862
  • Novgorod happened to be Russia's first important city.
  • Around 880, Oleg, a nobleman from Novgorod moved to Kiev on the Dnieper River. Due to the river providing transportation, Kiev grew into a principality.
  • Kiev est. 880
