  • Pope
  • King / Monarch
  • Nobles
  • The Pope was the "ruler" or main governing body of the Catholic Church, and each king was the ruler of his country or estate. The Popes ensured that the Catholic Church didn't descend into chaos, and the Kings tried to maintain control over their subjects.
  • Knights/ Vassals
  • People of the Middle Ages. A king (or lord) ruled large areas of land. To protect his land from invasion, the king gave parts of it to local lords, who were called vassals. In return, his vassals promised to fight to defend the king's land.
  • Merchants / Farmers/ Craftsman
  • European nobility originated in the feudal/seignorial system that arose in Europe during the Middle Ages. Originally, knights or nobles were mounted warriors who swore allegiance to their sovereign and promised to fight for him in exchange for an allocation of land (usually together with serfs living thereon).
  • Peasants /Serfs
  • The knights were heavily armored soldiers who rode on horseback. Only the wealthiest nobles could afford to be a knight. They needed very expensive armor, weapons, and a powerful war horse. The first knights of the Middle Agesfought for Charlemagne, the King of the Franks, in the 700s.
  • A medieval merchant was a business-person that would travel to trade goods with other villages. A medieval merchant would source his supplies and sell them to various customers at markets or medieval fairs
  •  The Medieval peasant together with freeman and villeins, lived on a manor in a village. Most of the peasants were Medieval Serfs or Medieval Villeins. The small, thatch-roofed, and one-roomed houses of the Medieval Peasant would be grouped about an open space (the "green"), or on both sides of a single, narrow street.
