The kittens were kept in darkness unless they were in the visual display apparatus
From 2 weeks of age to 5 months the kittens spent 5 hours a day in this visual display apparatus (vertical cylinder, 46cm diameter) and the inner wall was covered with high contrast black and white stripes. For half of these kittens the stripes were vertical
For the other half, the stripes were horizontal and the pattern was the independent variable
When the kittens were removed from the apparatus, they spent several hours a week in a small, well lit room where their visual reactions were observed in many different ways - dependent variable
From 7.5 months, biological studies were conducted of individual neurones in the primary visual cortex of the kittens
Controls ensured that kittens had identical visual environments for example, the cylinders were the same diameter and length and were illuminated from above
