  • We are going to amputate your leg, due to the wound.
  • Most gunshot wounds to limbs resulted in amputation due to lack of knowledge and resources.
  • Bromine was used to treat gangrene in the operating room. Bromine is a naturally occurring element. Gangrene is a disease that killed many soldiers.
  • Thousands of women served as volunteer nurses during the Civil War.
  • Clara Barton became a nurse during the Civil War even though she had no prior experience other than caring for her ill brother. She became known as "Angel of the Battlefield" for her work.
  • The nursing profession was in its infancy and was dominated by men-women generally were considered too frail to cope with rigors of administering the sick.
  • This helped start the Red Cross, and other nursing foundations that we have today.
