Rainsford heard a sound in the distance that startled him, he ran to the rail and tried to see in that direction. His pipe fell into the water, Rainsford tried to reach for it but he fell into the water. "The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head."
After falling asleep on the shore, he remembered the gunshots. He started walking towards that direction and saw lights. When Rainsford arrived at the house he knocked on the door. "In his hand, the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at Rainsford's heart."
The general and Rainsford discuss hunting opinions. The general studies what kind of hunter Rainsford is. "Whenever he looked up from his plate, he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly."
Rainsford is forced to play the generals game. Rainsford's chances of survival are slim but he still has faith. "Hunting? Great guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder!"
The general hunts at night, Rainsford walks in circles to mess up the general. Rainsford finds a tree to hide in. "He made his way along with his eyes fixed in utmost concentration on the ground before him. He paused, almost beneath the tree, dropped to his knees and studied the ground."
Rainsford makes it to the sea, he decides to jump into the sea and make it look like suicide. "He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea..."
