  • Tom was surprised when he saw the liver and heart hanging from the tree.
  • Tone: Surprising
  • Tom had no idea he was going to see what he saw at the tree which shows his tone.
  • He looked up at the tree and saw his wife's white apron.
  • The fact that the whole story is about Tom selling his soul to the Devil for money, makes the story grim.
  • Word Choice: Grim
  • Grim means dark and ugly, the words that Erving used represented a dark, ugly vocabulary.
  • Tom approaches the Devil for money and agrees to sell his soul.
  • "He reposed himself for some time on the trunk of a fallen hemlock, listening to the boding cry of the tree toad, and delving with his walking staff into a mound of black mould at his feet."
  • Imagery:
  • The way Irving described the forest and where Tom was sitting you can almost see it and it looks really dark and kind of mysterious.
  • Style:
  • Everything To did in the story was out of greed and the desire to obtain money anyway possible.
  • The theme is it's easy for greed to control one's life and actions when its the only thing on one's mind.
  • Theme:
  • Tom was willing to sell is soul to the Devil for money and he hadn't realized what he did because of his greed, it was too late for him to get out of the deal now.
  • The Theme was greedy

  • During both times people were sneaky and greedy and the things they did for something else i return was un beliveable
