  • What are social classes and what do they do?
  • Peninsulares

  • Mestizos 
  • Peninsulares were born in Spain. They enjoyed certain privileges and could be assigned to higher responsibility. The peninslulares are at the top of the social classes.  
  • Mulattoes
  • Slaves and Natives
  • There parents came from Spain but the creoles were born in the new world. Creoles were the second highest on a social class chart.
  • A man of mixed race, especially the offspring of Spanish and  a american Indian. In Latin and north america, Mestizos entered the rank and file of armies and wage laborers who worked in mines and in the fields. 
  • A person born of one white parent and one black parent. They were often looked open with contempt and  by their mistresses.
  • Slaves and Natives were treated very poorly. They were at the bottom of all the social classes. Their only job was to work on farms and do labor for Americans.
