  • Take this coffee pitcher and set it down by Miss Alexandra. Be careful and don't drop it.
  • You're mighty dressed up, Miss Jean Louise. Where are your britches today?
  • Haha!
  • Whatcha going to be when you grow up, Jean Louise? A lawyer?
  • Under my dress.
  • Symbol
  • Nome, just a lady.
  • Excuse me, ladies. Alexandra, could you come to the kitchen. I want to borrow Calpurnia for awhile.
  • Scout asks Calpurnia if she needs any help with serving Aunt Alexandra's missionary circle. Cal let's her take in the coffee pitcher, but warns her not to spill it.
  • Cal, I want you to go with me out to Helen Robinson's house. Tom's dead.
  • Yessir, Mr. Finch.
  • Miss Maudie comments on Scout's dress and asks where her britches are. Scout says under her dress. The ladies laugh, but Scout and Miss Maudie don't. Miss Stephanie asks if Scout is going to be a lawyer. Scout answers no, just a lady. Scout's dress and holding Miss Maudie's hand are symbols.
  • They're perfectly willing to let him wreck his health doing what they're afraid to do.
  • We trust him to do right. Stop that shaking. Get up, Alexandra, we've left 'em long enough.
  • Atticus disrupts the missionary circle to get Aunt Alexandra. He asks if he can take Calpurnia with him. Atticus, Aunt Alexandra, Scout, and Miss Maudie go to the kitchen.
  • Calpurnia's on an errand for a few minutes, Grace. Let me pass you some more of those dewberry tarts.
  • After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I.
  • Atticus delivers the news that Tom Robinson is dead. He asks Calpurnia to go with him to Helen's house. They leave.
  • Aunt Alexandra worries about Atticus and asks how Maycomb can do this do him. Miss Maudie explains how they believe he will do what is right. They go back into the dining room.
  • Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie continue to act like ladies and serve the missionary circle since Calpurnia is gone. Scout decides to do the same, because if Aunt Alexandra can be a lady at a time like this, then so can she.
  • Oh, Mrs. Perkins, you need some more coffee. Let me get it.
