  • "Let's all remain neutral!!"
  • "We need the embargo act!"
  • The war between Britain and France began in 1803 and went on until 1815.
  • "ME TOO!"
  • "Taxes are so low on my cargo! I have no money!!"
  • The war was on the same land as the U.S. In 1807, the U.S. passed the embargo act so they wouldn't get involved.
  • "GO AWAY YOU ILLEGAL TRADERS!"
  • Embargo means to stop all trade and commerce with other countries. In other words, this banned all foreign trade.
  • Because of the ban on foreign trade, taxes dwindled and traders began losing money.
  • Congress allowed the militia to deal with illegal traders who tried to rebel.
  • The embargo act had such a negative effect on the U.S. that in 1809, the act was repealed. Traders were allowed to trade anywhere besides Britain and France.
