Storyboard Text

  • I am George Meade, I was appointed by Abraham Lincoln to be the commander of the Army of the Potomac, replacing Gen. Joseph Hooker.
  • Gettysburg- A town in Pennsylvania, about 35 miles southwest of Harrisburg
  • I am the Confederate Leader and my pride is what pushes me, when Meade wasn't scared I lost a Gettysburg.
  • July 1st, 1863
  • The Union army gathered its strength on the hill and extended defensive lines southward along Cemetery Ridge.
  •  Lee ordered an attack on the left side of the Union line. Lee knew that the could win the battle if his troops captured Little Round Top from the Union forces.
  • I am Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught lawyer, legislator and vocal opponent of slavery, and I was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860.
  • July 2nd, 1863
  • I am George Pickett, a Confederate General. Under my supervision was the 3rd day of Gettysburg.
  • "Now, on July 3, Lee decided to attack the Union center, stationed on Cemetery Ridge, after making another unsuccessful attempt on the Union right flank at Culp’s Hill in the morning. The majority of the force consisted of Pickett’s division, but there were other units represented among the 15,000 attackers. There were almost 3,000 Confederate casualties," (History para. 7).
  • July 3rd, 1863
  • Both armies, exhausted, held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew. The Confederacy was too weak to go on and decided to never invade the North again. Gettysburg was turning point because the Confederate forces never recovered.
  • "now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this," (ABOnline para. 5).
