Winston hides in a nook of in his room that conceals his movements from the telescreen. He takes out an ink pen and diary that he bought from a shady shop and writes "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" in it over and over.
Winston and everyone else attend a mandatory daily Two Minute Hates, which strengthens support for Big Brother and opposition for Goldstein. There, he sees O'Brien and the dark-haired girl.
Tell me old things!
At work, Winston is involved in rewriting records to suit the party and Big Brother. He receives whichever piece of information is unsuitable and creates fictional facts, statistics, and people to alter history. He dictates the new record into a speakwrite and destroys the old.
Winston eats lunch in the canteen with Syme, another party member who is extremely loyal yet outspoken. Winston laments to himself that Syme, neither a friend or an enemy, will probably be erased soon, due to his blunt and excessive personality.
Winston goes to the prole, or working class, part of town and enters a bar. He sees that the barman is old and probably remembers a time before the party was in power. He asks what life was like then.
The dark-haired girl falls on the ground in of Winston. He rushes to her and she secretly slips him a note that reads "I love you". Winston and the girl meet in the canteen later and then in Victory Square to discuss a plan to meet again later.
