  • Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell came home from golf one day and found their family bored. Looking for something to do, they looked to play badminton but were short on equipment, so started trying to play with ping pong paddles and a wiffle ball.

  • The first permanent pickleball court was constructed in the backyard of Joel Pritchard’s friend and neighbor, Bob O’Brian.

  • The National Observer published an article about pickleball followed by a 1976 article in Tennis magazine about “America’s newest racquet sport.”

  • United States of America Pickleball Association (USAPA) was organized to perpetuate the growth and advancement of pickleball on a national level. The first rulebook was published in March, 1984.

  • By 1990, pickleball was being played in all 50 states.

  • Currently, the sport of pickleball is exploding in popularity. The spread of the sport is attributed to its popularity within community centers, PE classes, YMCA facilities and retirement communities.
