  • By the late 18th century, the French population was divided into 3 estates. 1st Estate= the clergy 2nd Estate= the nobilty 3rd Estate= the peasants
  • 2nd Estate
  • 1st Estate
  • By 1787, the French government was bankrupt. People blamed the government for a lot of reasons like tax collectors not handing the tax to the government, spending too much on the war, even blaming their queen for buying too much luxuries.
  • What will happen to us???
  • I heard our government went bankrupt!!!
  • Most people in France depend on agriculture and farming in the 1700s. In the 1700s, terrible weather like winters, heavy rain, and too hot summers led to very bad harvests in France. Peasants and farmers having smaller incomes while food prices rise. Farmers also became unemployed.
  • We are not getting any harvest because of the weather
  • It can't be...Our life depends on this!!!
  • In August 1788, King Louis XVI called the Estates General for the first time since 1614. This is where all representatives from each estate gather up and they gather up in a place called the Versailles.
  • On June 20th, the members of the third estate pledged an oath at the Tennis Court Oath swearing not to separate until they have given France a constitution.
