Storyboard Text

  • I should be free since I have lived in free states.
  • The Dred Scott case started in 1857 when Dred Scott's owner died.
  • hmm... what should we do?
  • Dred Scott then decided to make a lawsuit saying that he should be free because he lived in free states like Wisconsin and Illinois.
  • sorry but you can't file a lawsuit because you're property.
  • Many northern lawyers supported him and believed he should be free because he lived in those states.
  • YAY!!
  • OH NO!!
  • The Dred Scott case was so big that it had to be settled by the supreme court, but it had a sad outcome.
  • The supreme court said Dred Scott couldn't even file a lawsuit because he wasn't a citizen, he was property. They also stated they don't have the power to outlaw slavery anywhere. So now slavery could be anywhere.
  • Northerners were scared and angry about all of this while southerners rejoiced.
