  • To the eye, Melba`s small town, Little Rock, Arkansas seemed as peaceful as a baby sleeping. She had many friends at her school that made her happy. But they were treated badly outside of school because of their skin color.
  • Hey!
  • Sup?
  • Melba`s school was a pig sty, and their education was limited because they were black. Melba and her peers could only dream of going to a school like CHS. Well at least that's what they thought.
  • ughhhh..
  • Leave N******!
  • Little did the nine friends know that a great oppurtunity to attend CHS would come to them. They decided they would integrate CHS. They were unsure of what to expect from the segregationists and were as scared as a mouse.

  • You Smell! YEAH!
  • Melba and the others were no where near prepared for the torture that the CHS students put them through. They were bullied, threatened, and physically abused. The segregationists were very unhappy. Melba shares with us that integration was as tough as an ox.
  • Haha! 2,4,6,8 we ain`t gonna integrate!

  • Most people gave the Little Rock Nine a hard time but there were also very nice people. Throughout the book, Melba and the others faced many difficulties, let downs, and inspiring people. Their Journey through integration was as steep as a mountain. They did their best to stand tall like the statue of liberty, but ended up being ants.

  • no fair
  • In the end, after feeling many mixed emotions like, scared, and wanting to give up. Their determination set the tone of strong, powerful, determined, and confident. Many events were scary and frightening, but in the end they learned that if you believe you can achieve, hard work pays off, and confidence is key. They felt as if they were floating clouds.
