  • A dutch comany known as the VOC reresented and established power throughout Indonesia
  • The VOC itself formed a single organization, traded across a vast area, possessed superior military force, and employed bureaucracy of servants.
  • In 1620 a ruler of the Javanese kingdom named Sultan Agung wanted to extend his power over Bantam, however, Bantam belongs to the British at the time, which led to the to the siege to the Dutch fortress at Batavia.
  • During 1641 the VOC captured Malacca from the portugese and confined the British, leaving them to be the major power of the region
  • However, during the 18th century, the VOC was having difficulties on financially maintaining their company due to corruption within the company and a breach with their monopoly
