Storyboard Text

  • Title
  • Paraphrase
  • Connotation
  • The title hints that the poem will be about some bird. Along with Poe's dark style, a raven may resemble death.
  • Attitude
  • Once upon a midnight dreary
  • A raven comes into this mourning guy's house and made his day worse. He does this by jacking up his place and telling him he will never see his dead lover.
  • Shift
  • The main character is mourning
  • Theme
  • The attitude is a mournful, dreadful one. He hints this with the starting line, as well as referring the time as bleak.
  • The shift goes from upset to angry after the raven intrudes.
  • The theme is that you need to "knock out" grief. Loss of a dead one but letting the past weigh everything down, holds up the future.
