Hans Hubermann is asked if he will still help out an old friend and Max Vandenburg makes his journey for the Hubermann's household.
“The road back”
The Hubermanns have to keep Max a secret even when a Nazi party member came to their house to search their basement. Through the air raids and all day Max had to stay hidden in the basement.
Even through the tough times with hiding Max, Liesel and Max come to be great friends and Liesel learns that even in the hardest of times, her and Max will still be friends. They survive air raids and searches together and share their dreams and nightmares with each other.
As Hans Hubermann shows his smpathy for Jewish people, Max is forced to leave Himmel street for fear of the Hubermann's house being searched for Jews. Liesel must realize that Max has to leave for all of their safety.
When Himmel street is destroyed and Liesel's family dies, Liesel is forced to live with the fact that she is now on her own and must survive on her own as she has done for so long.
The basement of the Hubermann's house turns out to be deep enough that Liesel manages to survive the bombing and Death then tells us about her writing a story about her life. Max also returns and is looking for Liesel.
