The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme
Everyone was alright until the Tommy said the aliens didn't want them to leave so everyone started getting scared
Everyone stars blaming each other and people get mad and violence ensues.
I think the theme for "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is, people are their own worst enemy. This is proven multiple times in the text. The first piece of evidence that I had was at the end of the book after the chaos ensues when the aliens are about to leave and they start talking to each other. They say that all they have to do is turn off some of their vehicles and machines and that they will do the rest. This shows that even though the aliens did have some influence the humans still did most of the work. My second piece of evidence is when everyone is watching Steve and Charlie are going down to the police office and Tommy opened his big mouth and asked them not to stay because "they" didn't want them to leave. Before this happened everyone was being calm and level-headed. But Tommy mentioned this, everyone got worried and everything goes down hill from there. The final piece of evidence that I chose was when right after the aliens start turning everybody's lights on and of and everyone starts yelling names as to who are the aliens. Then violence follows. This supports my theme because if hadn't been so desperate to find a scapegoat then they might have kept more level-heads and wouldn't have started killing each other. That is why the theme for "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is, people is there own worst enemy.
