If we used a 1:1 scale on a map, we would have to have a life-size map, which we couldn't really use to get around.
If we didn't use bearings on a map, you could think that north is south and walk in the completely wrong direction.
If someone got the scale wrong on a map, we could go past where we want to go, or drop short.
If you didn't know bearings, you wouldn't know which way is which.
If you didn't know how to use scales when making a map you could be responsible for sending people to the wrong place.
So that is why you need to use to use scales and bearings because you could go in the wrong direction and not get to where you want to go.
