The 8th amendment is “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”Or in other words, no cruel and unusual punishments.
It is important to know about the 8th amendment because "If the federal government tried to bring back the rack, or thumbscrews, or gibbets as instruments of punishment, such efforts would pretty clearly violate the Eighth Amendment."
The 8th amendment is used today by prohibiting the use of, for example, hanging someone for their first time stealing.
