Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States : Feelings about state additions?
  • Hooray! More states are being added! More power!
  • Just got to make sure the new states are free states...
  • Northern Free States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line?
  • Oh my god, I cannot believe the Southerners actually agreed to it!
  • I was certain that they would notice there was more land above than below.
  • Northern Free States: Who was involved?
  • Where'd Abe go?
  • Restroom I assume. Maybe chop wood. You never know with Abe.
  •  Northern Free States/Northern Congressmen agreed with state addition as long as the state was free. Along with that, Free States wanted Congress to decide if a state should be Free or Slave because if the majority of states were free in congress then Free States could increase their power.
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about state additions?
  • We must make sure that new states that are added are slave states.
  • Free states liked the 36 30' line because there was land above that line than below it, therefore there would be more free states than slaves states after all the states were annexed.
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line?
  • No! Why did we agree to this, the north has more land than us!
  • Abe Lincoln, Ben Tallmadge, and John W. Taylor were three of the main men who worked to get the Missouri Compromise passed. They convinced northern congressmen to vote to pass the compromise, in which Maine and Missouri would be added to the union.
  • Southern Slave States: Who was involved?
  • Three individual bills? Are you sure they'll all be passed
  • Slave states supported state addition as long as they were slave states. The more new slave states in congress, the more power the slave states would have.
  • Agreed. That is essential.
  • Slave states felt that Northerners got the better part of the deal and that they were kind of cheated. They felt this way because there was more land above the line so there would be more new Free States than Slave States.
  • Don't worry. We'll take lands from Mexico and then we'll have more land than the them
  • Stephen Douglas and Millard Fillmore were the leading men in negotiating the Missouri Compromise. They were the men who proposed the Missouri Compromise in 3 separate bills.
  • Yes absolutely. It is better for one of the bills to pass than none
