After World War II, Due to the Yalta conference, Germany was divided into four parts. The Soviet Union control the Eastern part of Germany, which include Berlin capital. The U.S, France, British control the western part of Germany. However, Berlin was also divided into four parts that under control by the Soviet Union and the Allies.
The Soviet create a "Berlin blockade" between Western and Eastern Berlin, which block all water or land transportation from coming to Berlin. The Soviet tried to discourage the Allies from the control Western of Berlin. The Soviet hope the Allies would give up and withdraw from Berlin.

After the blockade was built, people cannot go out or go in west Berlin. Many people escape to the other side which is the eastern berlin.
People in Western Berlin was isolated, so they lacked supplies. Thus they were very hungry and poor.
The U.s and British have used the "Truman Doctrine", "Marshall plan" as the containment to prevent communism from spread out over Europe. And now they use "Berlin Airlift" to prevent the appeal of Communism in Western Berlin. In May 1949, The Soviet Union open the blockade angrily. However, these conflicts between The Soviet Union and the Allies encourage both side to start the "Cold War"
