  • The Giver begins in an utopian society, the main character Jonas is 11 years old and is about to become an adult
  • Falling Action
  • At the ceremony of 12 Jonas is about to receive his community job but, is skipped over. In a twist after everyone receives their tasks the chief elder goes back to Jonas and gives him the prestigious role of the Receiver of Memories.
  • Resolution
  • As the Receiver Jonas now has the authority to lie and ask questions he usually isn't allowed to, so when he ask his father to watch a release he soon realizes he lives in a dystopian society and that being released is being put to death
  • Conflict
  • Now that he knows his community has been secretly killing people Jonas takes Gabriel a baby that Jonas' father had been taking care of, and escapes the community in search of a place called elsewhere.
  • There is not a concrete resolution in The Giver but, in the end Jonas and Gabriel suffer great pain. However they remember they have each other and live on. it finally ends with the two of them sledding down a hill together in a memory that Jonas was given.
  • The major conflict in The Giver is Jonas' new emotions and abilities lead him to conflict against the restrictions that his society has set up to combat the rights of individuality and human interaction.
