  • Comte de Rochambeau, the general of the French, helped George Washington (the general of the Patriots) during the American Revolutionary war.
  • Together, the Americans and the French trapped the British in Yorktown, Virginia.
  • Eventually, the British soldiers ran out of supplies. Many were wounded or sick. The British general Charles Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781. This battle convinced the British that the war was too costly, so Yorktown was the final battle of the Revolution.
  • This is hopeless!
  • The Treaty of Paris was signed September 3, 1783. The British recognized the United States as an independent nation. The war was over!
