¨If he would rather die, said Scrooge, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.¨
¨My dear sir, said the other, shaking hands with him, I don't know what to say to such munifi____, don't say anything, please reported Scrooge.¨
People always have the ability to change.
Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! A squeezing, winching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetoold sinner! Hard and sharp as a flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire.
In this quote Scrooge said that all of the poor people that have to go to debtors prison should just die if they want to to decrease the population that is unneeded. This was extremely mean of Scrooge and cold hearted basically saying people that dont want to live should just kill themselves.
¨Bob, my good fellow, than I have given you for many years! I'll raise your salary, and endeavor to assist your struggling family, and we will discuss your affairs this afternoon, over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop.
In this quote Scrooge made a tremendous donation to the two portly gentlemen and they were very thankful. More importantly he didnt say his name and chose to be anonymous in his donation. This proves that he is very hind now and warm hearted to helping the poor.
This evidence shows that Scrooge was very cold hearted and a sinner. This helps develop the theme because it shoes that Scrooge in the beginning of the passage was mean. This was shown by direct characterization. This also showed he was very non generous in any way.
This quote showed the theme in the way that Scrooge is being very nice to Bob and transforming from the mean person he was to now a kind person. He highered Bobs salary and Bob thought that he was going crazy cause he was not used to this side of Scrooge.
