Micheal Phelps started swim lessons at the young age of 7, but had struggles. His swim instructor let him float around on his back, and the first stroke he mastered was backstroke.
When Micheal was 11 he joined the north Baltimore aquatic club and was good enough to practice with 18 year old swimmers. He swam for many hours each day, quickly increasing his strength and speed.
Michel has adhd, he had trouble focusing in class, but as it turned out swimming was a great way for him to focus his energy.
Micheal Phelps made it to the 2000 Olympic games and became the youngest american swimmer to compete in the Olympics since 1932 at the age of 15
In 2001 at the spring nationals in Austin Texas Micheal Phelps broke the world record for 200-meter butterfly becoming the youngest person at age 15 and 9 months to set a world record
In 2003 young Micheal Phelps took part in 6 races at Barcelona, Spain and won 4 gold and 2 silver.
