When all the guys leave the ranch George wanders over to Crooks' place. Crooks jokes around and scares Lennie saying something may happen to George and he'd be all alone. Lennie gets defensive and says George would never do that to him.
After Curley's wife tempts Lennie to feel her hair he accidentally snaps her neck. He knows that he did something very wrong because George told him to stay away from her.
Lennie is shot by George because George didn't want Curley to torture Lennie for killing his wife. Slim understands Lennie's disability but Curley and the other wouldn't. George wanted Lennie to think of the house and the rabbits before he died so he didn't feel a world of pain.
