This is six year old Esperanza. She is a very wealthy Mexican girl. The person to her right is her papa. Papa and Esperanza love to take walks through the winding rows. Esperanza was told by Papa the if she listened very closely she could hear the valley heartbeat.
Esperanza is the main protagonist in this story. She has long brown hair and she wears a golden dress. Esperanza like to spend time with her family and friends.
This is Tio Luis. He is a bad man because he burnt down Esperanza's family's house. He threatens to burn the rest of their land and property in order to blackmail Esperanza's mom in to marrying him, but it didn't work because they moved to the US.
Esperanza's main internal conflict is her depression from her dad's death. She is struggling with getting over this and having to move to the US because her house burned down. She is not used to poverty and does not want to become a field worker.
The rising action of this book is when Papa's dead body was found by Miguel And Alfonso. This tragedy started Esperanza's depression and made the family really sad. Papa owned most of their land and had a lot of power. Esperanza's family lost a lot of power from this and gave Tio Luis a big opportunity to gain more money and power.
The climax of this book is when their house burned down. This was very tragic especially having happen shortly after Papa's death. They are sure this was planned by Tio Luis because Esperanza's mother refused to marry him. This caused them to create a plan to get away from Tio Luis.
