The Peasants Revolt

The Peasants Revolt

Storyboard Text

  • The Black Death had killed thousands of people. Peasants could get more money for their work. But then the King stopped this with the "Statute of Labourers" and people were angry.
  • The King had also brought in a new tax called the Poll Tax. It increased to 14p in 1381 and even poor people had to pay.
  • After rebelling in their villages, 60,000 peasants - led by a man called Wat Tyler - marched to London to demand a better life from the king.
  • In London, the peasants burned down buildings owned by rich people and demanded the King meet them. They even murdered the Archbishop of Canterbury!
  • The King met with Wat Tyler and agreed to his demands. No one really knows what happened next, but there was a scuffle with the King's guards and Wat ended up dead.
  • The peasants looked ready to attack, but the King talked them down and they left. The King didn't keep any of his promises - he killed many of the leaders and John Bull, the priest.
