The internet got it's start about 50 years ago and computers filled entire rooms. Researchers used this for years to communicate during the cold war. Because if one went down the others wouldn't follow.
In 1962, a scientist names J.C.R Licklider proposed the idea of a network of computers that could talk to one another. And in 1969 the first ever message was sent from one computer to another. This was sent over the ARPANET (the governments computer system at the time).
In 1971, there where an additional 4 computers attached to the network. Later in that year the the first system to send mail, through the ARPANET. This was later called Email. In this year, the transmission control protocol was introduced and was used to connect computers across the globe.
In 1991, a computer programmer named Tim Burners-Lee invented the world wide web. This was a change from the older computers because this was information anyone could access. And in 1992 Erwise was created which was a internet browser, and the first to have a graphical interface.
In the 1990s, there were a lot of firsts. The first online pizza order from pizza hut, the first internet bank was opened and in 1996 Nokia released its first cell phone with internet access.
The first recognizable social media site was named Six degrees, and was created in 1979. This enabled users to upload a profile and make friends. In 2004 the Facebook was born with YouTube following in 2005.
