The VOC was under the governor-generalship of Jan Pieterzoon Coen, Anthony van Diemen, and Joan Maetsuyker
In the Beginning...
Let's start colonizing the Malay and Indonesian archipelago for trade!
Malacca and Trade
Do we agree on this?
The VOC, also known as the Dutch East India Company, was founded on March 20, 1602. The VOC established commercial control in the Indonesian islands during the 17th century.
VOC vs. Mataram
My troops have infiltrated your army and you will now retreat!
The VOC captured Malacca from the Portuguese and built a network of factories in the Indonesian archipelago.
VOC vs. Mataram
Thank you! Your organization is actually not that bad - it helped me with my kingdom!
Since Malacca was a popular place for trade, with Malacca under the VOC’s control, they had more access to trade from overseas. This helped flourish the VOC’s economy.
Mataram and VOC
As a thank-you gift, here's some of our land for you :)
When Sultan Agung of the Javanese Mataram Kingdom wanted to extend his power to present-day Banten in the 1620’s, this brought the kingdom into conflict against the VOC. The Mataram kingdom was forced to withdraw.
But when Amangkurat I became sultan of the Mataram Kingdom, he got the kingdom into internal conflict and had the Dutch help him through the conflict. The people of the Mataram kingdom disliked Sultan Amangkurat I.
You're welcome! Give us something in return though.
The VOC would help the Mataram Kingdom during times of internal conflict and in turn, the Mataram Kingdom would give the VOC land for their services. This was how the company gained some land.
