  • Growth of the VOC
  • This land is all ours!
  • Commercial Monopoly
  • Let's implement commercial monopoly!
  • Commercial Monopoly
  • The profit all belongs to us!
  •  Gradually, almost all of Java came under Dutch control. At around 1755, the Mataram Kingdom had been reduced to a small amount of land.
  • Trading Plans
  • It will be easier for us to organize our goods through controlled sources of goods.
  • The VOC implemented commercial monopoly, in which it had factories to collect produce, pressured rulers to do business with the VOC only, etc.
  • Trading Plans
  • Why are you interfering with our local conflicts?
  • This resulted in the VOC earning the profit instead of the producers, and the VOC slowly gained more and more control over trade in the Indonesian archipelago.
  • The Fall of the VOC
  • There is too much corruption and smuggling, this is not okay.
  • No more VOC. This is enough.
  • With their commercial monopoly, they controlled the sources of different goods for easier organization. For example, sandalwood was limited to present-day Banten and cloves were limited to Ambon.
  • Agreed.
  • The VOC also attempted to control the Sumatran pepper trade by interfering with local conflicts with other rulers in the area, since pepper would've been very rare elsewhere.
  • We want to help.
  • We actually want to control the pepper trade...
  • All came to an end when the VOC ran into financial problems in the 18th century through corruption. In 1799, the Dutch government terminated the affairs of the Dutch East India Company.
