Kansas Nebraska Act
Stephen A. Douglas proposes the Kansas-Nebraska Act which repeals the Missouri Compromise and establishes popular sovereignty for both territories (became a law in 1854)
The race for Kansas begins: North and South settlers pour into Kansas.
Border ruffians led by David Atchison from Missouri vote illegally, winning a majority for proslavery candidates and issuing a series of proslavery acts.
"The Sack of Lawrence" Posse of 800 proslavery men burn headquarters, destroy newspapers' printing presses and loot many houses and stores of the town of Lawrence.
"The Pottawatomie Massacre" John Brown pulls 5 men from their beds, hacks off their hands and stabs them.
Name given after Kansas becomes a battleground between antislavery and proslavery settlers.
