  • Stephen A. Douglas proposes the Kansas-Nebraska Act which repeals the Missouri Compromise and establishes popular sovereignty for both territories (became a law in 1854)
  • The race for Kansas begins: North and South settlers pour into Kansas.
  • Border ruffians led by David Atchison from Missouri vote illegally, winning a majority for proslavery candidates and issuing a series of proslavery acts.
  • "The Sack of Lawrence" Posse of 800 proslavery men burn headquarters, destroy newspapers' printing presses and loot many houses and stores of the town of Lawrence.
  • "The Pottawatomie Massacre" John Brown pulls 5 men from their beds, hacks off their hands and stabs them.
  • Name given after Kansas becomes a battleground between antislavery and proslavery settlers.
