  • this is portrayed as the black clothing of Montresor, the bones, the darkness and even the catacombs gave the suspicion that the end results would be death since all the descriptions complemented each other to these dark themes.
  • Revenge
  • Fortunato always believed he was the best wine taster, especially when it comes to hearing Luchresi's name. This made him egoistical. He mentions in the essay "And as for Luchresi he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontiallado." Montresor also gave him many chances to turn back after he recognizes that he is sick and said that luchresi should help.
  • Betrayal
  • Alcohol and drunkness play central roles in the story, contributing to Fortunato's gullibility and ultimate demise in Montresor's wine cellar.
  • Paradox
  • Montresor is plotting against Fortunato due to the fact that he has insulted Montresor multiple times, and Montresor was keeping track. He first plans to decieve him and then killing him.
  • Fortunato betrays himself by not paying attention to his surroundings. He sets out a hideous retribution, enacted below ground in a mass grave. The story shows lenghts human beings will go to feel better when they are betrayed.
  • Montresor hates Fortunato but pretends to be his close friend, Montresor is sure that his servants arent home precisely because he ordered them to stay home! In the story he mention the masons, but in this case he is literally bricking fortunato in his family crept Intombing him alive!
