Fortunato always believed he was the best wine taster, especially when it comes to hearing Luchresi's name. This made him egoistical. He mentions in the essay "And as for Luchresi he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontiallado." Montresor also gave him many chances to turn back after he recognizes that he is sick and said that luchresi should help.

Montresor is plotting against Fortunato due to the fact that he has insulted Montresor multiple times, and Montresor was keeping track. He first plans to decieve him and then killing him.
Fortunato betrays himself by not paying attention to his surroundings. He sets out a hideous retribution, enacted below ground in a mass grave. The story shows lenghts human beings will go to feel better when they are betrayed.
