Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • WE NEED SLAVERY TO END NOW
  • Yes, if that doesn't happen, then slavery will take over!
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power?
  • Our state should decide, not the Federal Government
  • It is truly wrong that the Federal gov has power to fiddle with our property, slaves.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • Jeez man, the fact that slavery is spreading is scary
  • Yeah, agreed, if it grows too much then we will not have much say in what we believe in
  • The North wanted slavery to end, but if it didn’t end, then slavery will continue to spread.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it
  • Supporting the compromise is in pour best interest as the South so we can recover fugitive slaves and expand slavery to the West
  • Northerners believed that congressional power was wrong because they felt that the federal government shouldn’t have any authority to pass any law that bans or regulates slavery in any way. They also felt that the State should decide.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • The state government needs to decide if they're going to be a slave or free state...
  • They feared that slavery would take too much power in Congress, and influence them so that the North would not have much say in what they believe in.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • I'm scared that slavery will be abolished
  • The South supported the compromise because it forced citizens to help in the recovery of fugitive slaves and it opened the way for West to expand slavery
  • They believed that the state government should decide if they are going to be a slave state or a free state to preserve the institution of slavery
  • ...Yes agreed
  • Southerners feared that states could nullify or overturn federal laws that they considered unconstitutional. They also feared that slavery would be abolished. The south economy was also worried and mad because there was a protective tariff that supported the North.
  • I too am scared that the economy will suffer because the protective tariff will support the North
