Storyboard Text

  • I don't want to leave Middle Swan and move to Fort Madison.....
  • By the time Nit Spindle moves to Middle Swan, Hennie is in her mid-80s and her daughter, Mae, is insisting that Hennie move in with her in Fort Madison, Iowa. The winters in Middle Swan are too severe and Mae worries about her mother. Hennie has agreed to move at the end of the year, but she is dreading it. And, she has unfinished business to tend to in Middle Swan, CO.
  • Hennie and Nit Spindle spend many days together, with the old woman teaching Nit the mountain ways, and also passing along all of her stories to Nit, so they aren't forgotten. Hennie is quite the story teller, and Nit says her stories help to heal her.
  • Hennie worries about Nit, especially since her husband, Dick, works on the dredge boat. The dredge boat is a dangerous job, tearing up the river bank looking for gold, and many men are injured or killed while working on it.
  • After a few weeks, Hennie realizes that Nit is expecting a baby again, and they begin to make quilts and blankets for the coming baby. Hennie continues to worry about Nit and her young husband, and wishes there were something she could do to help them.
  • One afternoon, Hennie & Nit took a break from raspberry picking, and Hennie told her the story of her daughter, Mae. Mae was not Hennie & Jake's biological daughter, but rather Hennie found Mae abandoned along the wagon trail that she took coming to Colorado. Hennie searched for Mae's family along the way, but couldn't find them. So she raised Mae as her and Jake's daughter.
  • Hennie also looks out for Nit in other ways, such as introducing her to the Ten Mile Stitchers and adding her to their quilting group. She also cues her in on the people of Middle Swan, their histories and which ladies have "turned out". Hennie is good and kind to everyone she meets.
