Storyboard Text

  • At the start of the 5th century BC, the ruler of the Persian Empire was Cyrus the Great.
  • Cyrus the Great believed the independent Greek city-states would be easy to take over and conquered the Ionians of Asia Minor.
  • I believe the independent Greek city-states would be easy to take over!
  • Then, in 499 BC, Miletus lead revolt, which Athens supported. Cyrus the Great crushed the revolt but then remebers that Atens supported it.
  • Wait a minute... Athens supported the Ionian revolt! How dare they?!
  • 490 BC, the Persians had a new King, Darius. The Persians were at the plains of Marathon, which was about 40 Km from Athens.
  • I'm King Darius!
  • At the Plains of Marathon the Athenian general, Miltiades dispatched a runner to get help from the Spartans. He did, but died of exhaustion. Also, the Spartans arrived too late  to help.
  • Help the Athenians win this battle!
  • The Persians had more troops, cavalry and archers.
