The main character, Mr.Adley, talks like the reader is an old friend who knows who he is. He also makes a big fuss over how long it takes to get a cab in New York on stormy nights.
Once Mr.Adley gets out of his taxi, he walks to "the club",but this is no ordinary club. This club is a place where stories of all kinds are told, comedy, drama, and even horor. He is greeted by Stevens, the butler.
Tonight, it was Dr.McCarron's turn to tell a story. He started his story by telling the others that it is a horror story based off of true events.
Dr.McCarron tells his patient about the breathing method, an experimental way of making child birth easier and less painful.
When McCarron's patient starts having contractions, she doesn't have time to wait for a taxi cab, so she drives to the hospital. On the way there, she gets in an accident with an ambulance and gets decapitated. When Dr.McCarron arrives at the scene, he sees that his patient is still somehow still doing the breathing method, and os able to deliver the baby.
After the baby is delivered, Dr.McCarron goes to cover the head of his patient, but just before he does so, he hears it whisper "thank you doctor McCarron." After the story is over, everyone leaves in disbelief.
