Storyboard Text

  • Hi! I am Tomas, the most famous and richest griot to have ever lived. Mansa Musa himself invited me to come on his hajj to Mecca.
  • Hi, I am Musa, the sultan of Mali. I am going on a pilgrimage to Mecca with many people and camels, and gold, because the Qur'an says so.
  • We have stopped in Walata, and have traveled 500 miles. Everybody is really tired, and some people have even died. We must keep going to are next stop, Taghaza.
  • We are in Taghaza, the city of the salt mines. Here, it is mostly slaves who work day and night to mine salt, then merchants come to buy it. Some people did not want to stop here, since it is very hot and desolate.
  • We are getting to leave Cairo, the capital of Egypt to go to the religious city of Mecca. It was very nice here, and Mansa Musa spent lots of gold. In fact, he has spent so much gold, that there was lots of inflation and gold has been devalued. Also, there will not be enough for the way home, so Mansa Musa had to borrow some currency from Cairo.
  • We have finally arrived home, after crossing thousands of miles and the entire Sahara desert. We have payed our respects to Allah, and now I am ready to take a nap.
