  • Western Africa, 1870s-1898
  • The French defeated the Samori. This gave them control over a large portion of Africa's west coast.
  • Northeastern Africa, 1869
  • In 1869, the Suez Canal was opened up and created a shortcut for trade from Egypt to India. This made Egypt very beneficial to Britain.
  • Southern Africa, 1867
  • In 1867, diamonds were found by europeans, and people of all races swarmed to southern Africa hoping to get rich.
  • Western Africa, 1824-1896
  • After many years of war with the Ashanti, the British took full control of the small strip of land they had claimed.
  • Northeastern Africa, 1898
  • At Omdurman, British forces shot down over 10,000 Sudanese soldiers and only lost 28 soldiers of their own.
  • Southern Africa, 1899-1902
  • Britain went to war with the Afrikaners that wanted to break away from them. After losing a few battles, the Afrikaners started using guerilla warfare, but surrendered after three years in 1902.
