Western Africa, 1870s-1898
The French defeated the Samori. This gave them control over a large portion of Africa's west coast.
Northeastern Africa, 1869
In 1869, the Suez Canal was opened up and created a shortcut for trade from Egypt to India. This made Egypt very beneficial to Britain.
Southern Africa, 1867
In 1867, diamonds were found by europeans, and people of all races swarmed to southern Africa hoping to get rich.
Western Africa, 1824-1896
After many years of war with the Ashanti, the British took full control of the small strip of land they had claimed.
Northeastern Africa, 1898
At Omdurman, British forces shot down over 10,000 Sudanese soldiers and only lost 28 soldiers of their own.
Southern Africa, 1899-1902
Britain went to war with the Afrikaners that wanted to break away from them. After losing a few battles, the Afrikaners started using guerilla warfare, but surrendered after three years in 1902.
