  • January 22, 1905
  • The disastrous Russo-Japanese War was fought between Russia and Japan over Manchuria. It was supposed to create nationalistic feels for the Russian people because the Russians severely underestimated the military potential of Japan. Japan became the first Asian nation to defeat a European nation which brought more shame for the Russians. This is one of the reasons why people revolted in the infamous revolution of 1905, and other revolutions to come.
  • Peasants faced many difficulties such as poverty and starvation. They were too impoverished to buy the land they worked. Even landowners were unable to feed their families. The Czar did not do anything for his people.
  • On Sunday, January 22, 1905, a march occurred in St. Petersburg. The peaceful marchers wanted reform because of the harsh living conditions, and for the disaster in the Russo-Japanese War.
