  • Imperialism is caused by a want or need of multiple things. Nations want resources from other areas for wealth. They also want more power, and want to spread their religion or culture. It also results in the expansion of territory and cheaper labor, as well as new markets and military needs, such as ports.
  • United States businessmen want to take over Hawaii for its resources and trade, but Queen Liliuokalani wants to make Hawaii for Hawaiians. These businessmen work with Congress to organize an invasion. This is presented to President Cleveland, which is refused by him. President McKinley, however, makes Hawaii a state after he enters office.
  • In 1853, the United States sent a steam-powered fleet led by Matthew Perry to force Japan to open trade with outside nations. This show of force convinced Japan to work towards industrialization. This caused Japan to rapidly modernize, which eventually led to the Russo-Japanese war.
  • The Panama Canal was sought after by the United States for multiple reasons. It was wanted because it would shorten the length of trips from East to West. It would also reduce the cost of merchant shipping. Finally, it would eliminate the heavy expense of maintaining two separate navies.
  • The Spheres of Influence divided China into multiple different areas, which are controlled by European nations. However, the United States was not included in this division. In response, the Open Door Policy, which provided each nation with an equal opportunity to trade with China, was created.
  • Spain was defeated by the United States in the naval Battle of Manila, which resulted in a U.S. victory in the Philippines. In response, Spain sold the Philippines to the United States. This resulted in the Philippine-American war, where the Filipinos fought for their independence for three years.
