Hi. I am the ozone layer. I am made up of three oxygen atoms bonded in a trigonal planar resonance structure. I help to protect you from harmful UV radiation that comes from the sun and to keep the planet warm enough for life.
Unfortunately, there are small holes forming in my structure. This is due to ozone depletion: known as the reduction in the concentration of ozone in the ozone layer.
Ozone depletion is caused by human pollutants such as CFCs and oxides of nitrogen, which disrupt the equilibrium of the atmosphere
When UV light shines on CFCs, it breaks the Cl-C bonds, producing a Cl radical. This molecule breaks down ozone creating more radicals.
Nitrogen oxides also catilitcally decompose oxygen via a radical mechanism.Essentially, oxygen radicals are formed by the breakdown of NO2 in UV light.
In terms of health, higher UV rays could wipe out existence on Earth, due to increases in non-melonama skin cancer cases and mutation
Ozone Depletion can have disastrous environmental and health related effects.
Environmentally, ozone depletion has links to global warming (an increase in global average temperature) that could have effects on ecosystems and sea levels.
